THE LED CONTINUED to flash red as the back-up cells leeched dry. Treasure hit the dash with the heel of her hand in the vague, emotional and irrational hope that the display would switch to green. It went dead altogether.

'Whoops,' Treasure said. 'Y'know, this is probably the point where you say there's something you really have to tell me,' she said to Terry.

Terry shrugged and smiled slightly. 'Most of my acts of appalling depravity tend to have involved you, anyway. Besides, once we get out of this in one piece I'd never hear the end of it.'

'I don't want to rain on your parade, Terry, but getting out of this in one piece isn't much of an option.'

'Of course it is. I have absolute faith in you.' Terry smiled again. 'So you're never going to hear the gory details of that diesel in Bell. Nary a word of electrodes and custard and Wellington boots shall pass my lips.'

Treasure laid her cheek against her spouse's arm. 'Did I ever tell you that I could quite like you, if there's nothing better going?'

'With alarming frequency,' said Terry.

The phone bleeped.

'Steel?' Armitage said. 'How you doing?'

'Not so hot,' said Treasure.

'Yeah, well I think I've got a solution.'

Treasure's heart leapt.

'You should be hitting the Ramp 214 turn-off any minute now, right?' said Armitage.

'Um . . . I think we just passed it,' said Terry.

Treasure's heart sank again.

'Oh stomm . . . no, no, hang about.' A brief pause. 'You can do it from 215, too. It's doable. Listen, Steel, we've got one shot at this so you take the turn-off and then you follow my directions exactly, you got it?'

'I got it,' Treasure said. From the driving seat, Terry nodded.

'And just so you know, Steel, I still haven't forgotten about that pint you owe me.'

'Up yours, you old git,' said Treasure.
